The HUD Section 184 Indian Home Loan Guarantee Program is a home mortgage program specifically designed for American Indian and Alaskan Native families. Section 184 loans are available for homes both on and off native lands and can be used for new construction, purchasing a home or a mortgage refinance. Section 184 loans offer flexible underwriting with rates and terms that are competitive with other types of mortgage financing.
To qualify, you must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. The property must be a single-family home used as your primary residence. While the property can be on or off the reservation, only certain states and counties are eligible for Section 184 financing. Down payment requirements for Section 184 loans are very low, and gift funds and/or tribal assistance are permitted.
